What is OSB? OSB stands for Oriented Strand Board. OSB is a structural panel used in
applications such as roof and floor sheathing. OSB is manufactured by layering strands of wood
veneer (oriented strand board) around a directional center or OSB panels core. OSB consists of
3-5 layers of dimensional full sawn softwood lumber oriented at right angles to each other and
lightly bonded together with an adhesive. The OSB price forecast for 2021 is good news for
manufacturers and OSB users in North America but not in Europe.
OSB has developed in recent years to become the benchmark product in many markets
throughout the world, replacing plywood in some markets. OSB panels are nowadays
considered more than just structural building boards; OSB has become a complete system
solution combined with OSB accessories and OSB's minimum impact on the environment. OSB
is also available with special features such as fire retardancy and I-joists.
OSB is manufactured in three general types: standard, wafer board, and structural plywood.
Waferboard OSBs are used for applications where cost is a key factor, such as sheathing on
light framed residential buildings or in some commercial construction. Structural OSBs panels
such as LVL (laminated veneer lumber), I-joists, beams, and glulam are produced for heavy
structural use in building construction. These typically come with higher strength ratings than
their wafer board OSBs counterparts, leading to better quality structures and OSB price forecast
